Freestyle skiing wasn’t always a sport. In fact, before it became officially sanctioned by the FIS (International Ski Federation) in 1979, it was thought of as too dangerous to be condoned. Because there really wasn’t a standard technique being used, it was thought of as an ill-advised display of macho behavior.
