While perhaps the most popular resorts are high in the Rocky Mountains, some of the absolute best are actually the Vermont ski areas that you may not have heard of before.

Located high up in the Northeast, New England has a fairly similar climate to that of the Northwest, though its conditions are more extreme.

There are a number of Vermont ski areas in operation. A lot of them are Vermont ski areas in which you can spend all day long with your family and friends and barely have to share the slopes with anyone (compared to places like Mountain High Ski Resort, Aspen, or Whistler).

But, believe it or not, there are also some areas that are incredibly large and popular.

Killington Ski Resort

One of those Vermont ski areas that are quite popular is Killington. This is, in fact, the largest ski area in eastern North America, and has been known to serve up to 17,000 skiers in a single day.

Sugarbush Ski Resort

Sugarbush is one of the largest ski resorts in New England. It is separated into two different areas: Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen.

In an effort to create a better relationship with the environment around them, the operators of Sugarbush Ski Resort have begun to switch a lot of their snow-making equipment to low-energy nozzles and operate their snow grooming equipment with nothing but bio-diesel.

• Vertical Rise: 2,600 feet
• Size: 508 acres of skiable land

Smugglers Notch Vermont

Named after a nearby peak which smugglers used many years ago, Smugglers Notch is one of those Vermont ski resorts that don’t necessarily attract tens of thousands of skiers each day.

In fact, it’s probably one of the more laid back ski areas in Vermont, even though it has the second highest average snowfall in the entire state. It’s also connected by a short route to a nearby ski resort in Stowe Vermont, so that you can have a great variety of skiing options available to you on the same trip.

• Elevation: 1,030 feet (base), 3,640 (summit)
• Vertical Rise: 2,610 feet
